Thankful for Reading

As we approach Thanksgiving here in the States, and begin thinking and focusing on what we are grateful for, reading is at the top of my list, for so many reasons. I wanted to share with you all the reasons I am so thankful for books and reading in the hope that it makes you think about this too.

In our busy, day to day lives, with a never-ending to-do list, reading is a great way to escape. Books can transport me to a different world, or a different period of time, whether that be for 20 minutes or a whole afternoon. Books help me wind down after a busy day.

Along with being busy humans, books and reading are now more accessible than ever before. You no longer have to carry around big hardcover books with you wherever you go. Now with smartphones and e-readers we have access to books in multiple formats all the time. I can pack my Kindle when I'm going on vacation and have hundreds of books at my fingertips and not take up any space in my suitcase! I can listen to an audiobook when I'm doing chores around the house, or when I’m driving. I love that books are now accessible to me at any time!

Another reason I am so thankful for books and reading is that it feels like a treat to me. When I get a new book or am able to devote some time to myself, it feels luxurious, and this treat is good for my brain and spirit. Other treats I enjoy (like peanut butter M&Ms) are not so great for me in large doses!

Last, and the most important reason I am so grateful for books and reading is that it has led me to make lifelong best friends. I used to work at a book store (over a decade ago) and the people I worked with, and regular customers I interacted with became and still remain some of my best friends, (and some of my best book recommenders!)

So in our time of endless distractions, reading can help us slow down and provide a rich experience in our every day lives. There are probably a lot more reasons to be thankful for reading, and I’d love to here yours.

Until next time, fellow book dragons, keep those pages turning.
